Gyroscope & Motion Sensor Guide
How to Use This Tool
- On a smartphone or tablet, click "Start Sensor Tracking" and physically tilt your device in any direction. The 3D cube rotates in real time matching your movements.
- iOS / iPhone Notice: Apple Safari requires explicit permission to access motion hardware; tap the prompt to grant access.
- On desktop computers without built-in motion chips, use the Desktop Simulation Sliders to manually test 3D orientation.
- Inspect the real-time Euler rotation angles and gravity acceleration readouts.
Understanding the 3 Rotation Axes
- Alpha (α - Compass): Rotation around the vertical Z-axis (0° to 360°), tracking directional compass heading.
- Beta (β - Pitch): Front-to-back tilt (-180° to +180°), such as tilting the phone towards or away from your face.
- Gamma (γ - Roll): Left-to-right tilt (-90° to +90°), such as rotating between portrait and landscape.
Why Accel Z Reads ~9.81 m/s² at Rest
Even when sitting completely still on a flat table, your device experiences Earth's gravitational field. The internal accelerometer registers a constant downward gravitational force of 9.81 m/s² along the vertical Z axis.
How Mobile Motion Sensors Work (MEMS)
Modern mobile phones contain microscopic silicon electromechanical systems (MEMS) smaller than a grain of sand. These micro-sensors measure Coriolis acceleration when your hand turns, enabling instant screen orientation flipping, step counting, and mobile gaming controls.
